Designed for adults with disability who enjoy travelling, making friends and getting amongst it all!
Let's go on a Getaway!
Getaways are short breaks for adults with disability aged 18 and older. Getaways are held regularly on weekends, as well as mid-week breaks and even interstate trips.
Getaways is are designed as respite from your everyday life. You’ll meet new people, form friendships, broaden your horizons and have loads of fun, all while achieving your NDIS goals and becoming more independent and confident.
Where can I go on a Getaway?
On Getaways, you’ll stay at beach houses, city apartments, campsites and hotels. This way, you’ve got the perfect spot to use as a base while you go exploring.
Meet on a Friday afternoon at Cara’s head office in Hindmarsh, at Unit 1, 2-4 Adam Street (on the corner of Manton Street). Return back to Hindmarsh to meet your family on Sunday afternoon.
Meet on a Friday afternoon at Cara’s Mount Gambier office, at the Group Training Employment Building, 173 Commercial Street West. Return back to Mount Gambier to meet your family on Sunday afternoon.
What will we do on a Getaway?
The choice is up to you! Cara’s staff will work alongside you with Active Support, which means we’ll do things with you, not for you or to you. That way, you can be as involved in everything as you like.
You might enjoy:
Sightseeing and visits to local attractions
Board games and puzzles
Cafe-hopping and eating out
Games and sports
Going to music festivals and sports games
Getaways is funded under “Core Supports” with the support Category “Assistance with Daily Activities”.
Our daughter Lucy attended Cara’s Camps for Kids program for several years before transitioning to Getaways when she turned 18. She has an intellectual disability, autism and severe social anxiety.
Camps for Kids and Getaways has made a huge difference to our daughter’s life. She has done activities and been to places that we as parents can’t get her to do, and she has been happy to do them with Cara staff. We see the photos of her doing things on Getaways weekends and are constantly amazed!
Over the past two years, Lucy has grown more confident in her social interactions through the efforts of the Getaways staff. I have been really impressed with the effort that Getaways staff have put into understanding Lucy’s needs and then fitting her into client groups that work for her and doing activities that build her confidence while always pushing her boundaries a little bit – which is what she needs. The weekend programs are always interesting and varied, but with enough continuity of staff which is so important to someone like Lucy.
Of course, there are incidents when things go wrong, but we have confidence that the Getaways staff know how to deal with Lucy and her quirky ways. Also we always get some debrief about issues. This shared experience has been invaluable as it has enabled us parents and Getaways staff to work together on ideas and solutions. It reflects what I’ve experienced with Cara over a long time – a willingness to be open to dialogue with parents, and in seeking a solution to problems.
I hope the program continues to provide such a great service.
