1995–2015 – Expanding Possibility Across South Australia

Growth, Innovation and Greater Independence

Following its transition to an independent organisation, Cara entered a period of significant growth and development. Across metropolitan Adelaide and regional South Australia, the organisation expanded its services, facilities and accommodation options, supporting increasing numbers of people with disability to live independently, develop life skills and participate more fully in their communities.

As the disability sector evolved, so too did Cara’s approach to service delivery. Expectations around disability support were changing, with greater emphasis being placed on individual choice, community inclusion and recognising the rights and aspirations of every person. Cara embraced these changes, moving beyond traditional models of care and continuing to develop supports that were tailored to each person’s goals, interests and needs.

Throughout these two decades, Cara strengthened its reputation as a trusted provider of accommodation, respite and community-based supports. The organisation worked alongside individuals, families, staff and advocates to create opportunities for people with disability to build meaningful relationships, develop confidence, participate in everyday life and achieve greater independence.

By 2015, Cara had grown from a specialist accommodation and respite provider into a recognised leader within South Australia’s disability sector. The foundations established during this period would position the organisation to navigate the next major transformation in disability services, the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), while remaining committed to supporting people to live lives filled with choice, connection, joy, purpose and belonging.
