New NDIS Changes Explained: What Participants Need to Know
The Australian Government has recently passed the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026. The bill introduces changes that will be implemented across the NDIS over the next 2 to 4 years. The aim of these reforms is to strengthen and improve the Scheme while ensuring it remains available for people with permanent and significant disability now and into the future. While the legislation has passed, participants can continue using their current NDIS plans and supports as normal at this time.

What Are the New NDIS Changes?
The new laws will impact several areas of the NDIS, including how people access the Scheme, how NDIS plans are developed and reviewed, how funding is used, how providers deliver supports, and how the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) addresses fraud and non-compliance.
Some administrative changes are expected to begin soon, while other reforms will be rolled out gradually following consultation with people with disability, families, carers, providers and the wider disability community. The Australian Government has confirmed that eligibility changes for new applicants are not expected to begin before 1 January 2028.
What Does This Mean for NDIS Participants?
For most participants, there is no immediate action required. The NDIA has advised that participants can continue accessing their approved supports and using their NDIS funding in line with their current plans while reforms are progressively introduced. As further details become available, the NDIA will provide updates and guidance to help participants understand what is changing, when changes will occur, and how they may be affected. Updates can be accessed below.
