Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Moving out on your own is a key part of the transition to adulthood. SIL means you can increase your independence with access to 24/7 support to assist you with daily tasks and building skills.
What support will I receive?
SIL support is tailored and flexible to what you need, dependent on your NDIS plan or alternate funding.
Your support worker can assist you with:
Family, relationships and friendships
Daily life tasks - including cooking and cleaning
Independent living skills
Health, medication and mealtime supports
What’s your service model?
We are proud to deliver person-centred active support. This means we get to know you as an individual, your likes and dislikes, how you like to be supported and what your goals and dreams are, both big and small.
Who will I live with?
We know that who you live with is very important. We spend a lot of time matching people who are like-minded and share similar interests and goals.
Where are your houses?
We have houses across the state – including in metropolitan Adelaide, Adelaide Hills, Murray and Mallee, Limestone Coast, Yorke Peninsula, Mid and Far North, and the Eyre Peninsula.
Is Cara a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) provider?
We are not an SDA or housing provider. The house, unit or apartment where you choose to live is your choice. It might be your own home, a Housing SA property, a private rental or a home managed by a community housing association. You, as the tenant, will sign the rental agreement with your housing provider. Cara, as your service provider of choice, will provide staff to work alongside you in your home.

Here’s what to do.
Complete the registration of interest form.
We will evaluate your needs and identify if Cara is the best provider for you.
If you’re not already eligible for SDA, we can help you to connect to Occupational Therapists to get Functional Capacity Assessments to assist with the SDA eligibility process.
If we’re the right provider, you will be asked complete an intake form (this is different to the registration of interest form you complete earlier in this process). We can then meet you at your home, a local café or welcome you to our head office at Hindmarsh to take you through the next steps of the process.
We will assess your funding, support ratios and start matching you with the right housemate and service.
Once we’ve found the right match, we will provide you and/or your guardian/support coordinator our Roster of Care Tool and Template for approval. We will then ask you to submit it to the NDIS.
The Roster of Care Template and Tool will be considered by the NDIS, together with all other information and evidence they have about your support needs. The NDIS will assess your home and living support needs and fund these accordingly. We can start planning and completing your move once you have sufficient funding in your plan for the support you require. Our team will support you with your transition and will be there every step of the way. We want to ensure that this process is well planned and considered, to ensure you to feel comfortable with this important transition.
We will work closely with you and your support network to complete the move to your new home. This will include identifying a move date, finalising tenancy and board arrangements, rostering your support staff and setting up your home environment.
It doesn’t stop there
Our Cara Connect team will:
- Regularly check in with you and your support network to hear your thoughts and feedback on our service.
- Help you to access supports within your budget.
- Assist you or your Support Coordinator to have your plan reassessed.
- Schedule your services.
- Be the single point of contact at Cara for you, your support network, Support Coordinators and decision makers.
- Stay up to date with the latest NDIS changes.
I’ve been living with Cara since I was 26. My parents worked out for me to come to Cara.
I like the staff because they are always nice to me. They help me with cleaning, help me with cooking and they take me out bowling and stuff.
I like going out, (Cara staff) take me to the bank and shopping.
I like my house because it’s not far from work. I work at Minda and I pack stuff like wine and dog treats.
I go to church on a Sunday with friends.
I love bowling. I bowl three days a week but I want some more support, someone to work with me on a Saturday and take me bowling. I’m a good bowler, you know.
